Why hasn't Erlang a regular newsgroup?

Hello,

why hasn't Erlang a regular newsgroup instead of a mailing list? A newsgroup
would be easier to check, without having to subscribe/unsubscribe, and a
news reader would make easier to follow discussions.

Maybe, because it is impossible to read newsgroups from gmail interface?

Well, I've just discovered I can effectively access this mailing-list from
http://groups.google.com/group/erlang-programming <http://groups.google.com>

However, your messages are discarded unless you are subscribed.
Therefore, maybe this group is managed on a mailing-list to avoid spam
(your messages would be ignored).
