Some time after that discussion, the compiler was changed to warn only for those variables that occur in a pattern and are exported from an above case/if/receive/try. So you can export a variable from the clauses of a case and then use it in a computation without complaints from the compiler, but if you use it in a match, you get a warning because it's likely that you thought it was actually free.
